This little and quiet village grew in size around a castle built by the First King of Portugal) (1139–1185).
The castle is a National Monument with a showy tower. Its little narrow streets form a network like a labyrinth inside its walls.
The Museum centre includes a moat from the middle Ages and a little part of the fortified walls.

This region has a close relation with the river Miño and its neighbour Galicia. Its “Festival do bacalao” (Cod Fair) is a tasteful gastronomic fair, where cod is cooked in different and varied ways, being the desire of both Portuguese and Galician people.
