Cathedral of Ourense

The magnificent Cathedral of Ourense, devoted to St. Martin, is the most famous monument of the city of Ourense and one of the most overwhelming Romanesque buildings all over Galicia. The reputation and historic-religious importance of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela has for sure minimized the popularity and prestige of this cathedral, one of the biggest and more interesting Romanesque monuments in Spain.
This temple was declared as National Monument on the 3rd of June, 1931 and is honoured as Basilica from 1887. The cathedral of Ourense was being built from mid-12th to mid- 13th centuries.

It is reported that its high altar was consecrated in 1188. It has therefore a latter-Romanesque style, influenced by the Cistercian world in some aspects of the architectonic structure and by the Matthew School in those related to sculpture (particularly the façades decoration).
The majestic west entrance (Pórtico of the Paradise) reproduces, in a simple manner, the structure of the Pórtico de la Gloria of the Compostela cathedral. This portico was built latter (mid-13th century); however, its sculpture is more hieratic and Romanesque than the Cathedral of Santiago.
It is also remarkable the preserved polychrome.
